Your dog could cost you the flat. Keeping a dog in a rented flat is not illegal: it depends on one line of the contract.

There is no law that settles it. The Spanish tenancy act, the LAU, says absolutely nothing about pets: the contract decides. If the contract expressly forbids them, the clause is valid. If it says nothing, you can keep animals, as long as they cause no damage and do not disturb the neighbours. And no, the animal welfare act did not change this: it does not oblige anyone to accept pets.

If you are a landlord with a flat let out, decide now and write it into the contract, because arguing about it two years later by text message will not win you the case. And if you are a tenant, ask for it in writing beforehand, not afterwards.

One exception that is clear: assistance dogs. They cannot be forbidden, whatever the contract says.
