"Don't register your address at my flat": that can't be forbidden

2026-08-31 · "Don't register your address at my flat": that can't be forbidden Watch on YouTube

What I say in the video

"Don't register your address at my flat." That sentence is a lie. It cannot be forbidden, and nothing happens if you do.

Registering on the municipal register, the padrón, is not a favour the landlord grants: it is an obligation. Everyone living in Spain has to register in the municipality where they usually live. The register reflects where you actually live, not who owns the flat. And the town hall cannot refuse it just because the landlord does not give permission.

If you let a flat, you lose nothing. Being registered gives no rights over the home and does not extend the contract by a single day. What you can control is who lives there, and that is done with an occupants clause in the contract.

If you are a tenant, the contract is all you need to register. If you want to register someone who is not on the contract, first check what it says about occupants.
