Leaving the flat and the water bill has not arrived yet? This is for you. You know the day you are leaving, but not what you have used up to that day, and the bill does not give you the reading you need to write down. So what do you do? You have to look at the water meter.

The water meter is always in the lobby or the basement of the building, in a bank of meters locked with a key. Everyone can get in: the lock opens with a master key sold at hardware shops, and the president of the residents' association usually has a copy.

How do you know which meter is yours? From the chart on the meter bank, like a game of battleships: find your flat in the matching row and column. Take the reading on the day you leave, because that number is your real consumption up to your last day in the flat. Put another way: it is how far your responsibility to pay goes.

And do not forget to shut the stopcock. It is always near the wet areas, in the bathroom, the kitchen or the utility gallery. Find it and turn it perpendicular to the pipe.

Give it five minutes and you will save yourself a lot of headaches. At Baula we photograph every meter in the flat: water, electricity and gas.
